1. General information
The main objective of the subject is to provide the student with the necessary means to know the most frequent nosological entities of general surgical pathology and of anaesthesiology and resuscitation in particular. In addition, the approach of this subject includes providing students with the appropriate methodology to learn and apply the techniques aimed at reducing or eliminating pain. The degree of knowledge regarding the above is enhanced with the hospital internship module in the surgical block.
It is mandatory that the student has passed General Surgical Pathology I.
In addition, the approach of the subject and its objective are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), such that the acquisition of the learning results of this subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement: Goal 3) Health and well-being; Goal 4) Quality education and Goal 10) Reduction of inequalities.
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results...
1. Distinguish the normal from the pathological, recognizing the signs and symptoms of the diseases under study
2. Know and apply the principles that govern all surgical activity
3. Know the concepts of sterility in order to apply them in the surgical field and in the proper use of
surgical instruments.
4. Collaborate with the surgeon, in those patients whose pathology involves an involvement or dental
compromise
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
1. Know the general processes of illness, healing and repair
2. Know and handle the most frequent emergencies and medical emergencies in dental practices, especially in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
3. Know the essential elements of the dental profession, with special emphasis on ethical principles
and legal responsibilities.
4. Know how to apply the principles of anxiety and stress management on oneself and on the patient in
particular.
5. Be able to acquire knowledge autonomously.
6. Be able to work as part of a team
7. Be able to handle information sources effectively, efficiently and critically.
8. Know the scientific method and be able to use it.
9. Be able to make a diagnostic judgment and apply the appropriate therapeutic measures, performing an effective
differential diagnosis.
3. Syllabus
I. Anaesthesiology and resuscitation
Introduction to the study of anaesthesiology and resuscitation. Types of local, regional and general anaesthesia. Anaesthetic drugs Antidotes. Accidents, complications and their treatment. Treatment of postoperative pain.
II. Surgical infections:
Concepts of surgical infection. Localized and generalized surgical infections. Bacteraemia. Sepsis.
III. Organ and tissue transplantation
Development of organ and tissue transplants. Types of transplants. Rejection: types. Organizational and legal aspects. Future of transplantation.
IV. Osteoarticular surgical conditions
Pathophysiology of bone tissue and bone. Osteomyelitis. Fractures. Articular physiopathology. Articular trauma Septic arthritis. Degenerative and microcrystalline arthropathies.
V Otorhinolaryngology
Sinusitis. Nasal sinus tumours. Otorhinolaryngologic septic focus.
VI Pathology of the circulatory system
Arterial, venous and lymphatic pathology.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical program offered to the student to help them achieve the expected results.
Explanatory and demonstrative sessions, on the part of the teaching staff, of the contents of the subject, using audiovisual and computer material.
Knowledge of the surgical environment and the handling of instruments for the performance of the four basic surgical procedures:
1. Diaeresis
2. Dissection
3. Excision
4. Synthesis
Elaboration of a research article related to the subject.
Hospital internship, 20 h, in the general surgery service.
5. Assessment system
Theoretical exam:
Written exam, of 10 multiple-choice questions, with only one correct answer (3 points of the grade), failed question penalizes 0.3 points; 4 short questions (4 points of the grade) and a topic to develop (3 points of the grade).
A minimum grade of 5 points in each section is required to pass the exam.
The grade for this exercise represents 90% of the total.
Practical framework.
Hospital internship, General Surgery Service, 20 hours. Compulsory in order to access the theoretical exam.
Writing of a scientific article related to the syllabus.
The internships and the work, account for the remaining 10% of the final grade.
